The National Women's Basketball League ( NWBL ) was the women's basketball league in the United States from 1997 to 2007 .
The NWBL was founded in 1997 in the shadow of the two professional leagues, the Women's National Basketball Association and the American Basketball League . In contrast to the other two leagues, the NWBL was initially just a pure amateur league. In 2001, however, the NWBL became a professional league and the league was renamed NWBL Pro League . The regular season was then played during the WNBA season break, so some professionals from the WNBA also played in the NWBL.
