Jeremy Shu-How Lin ( Chinese : 林書豪; pinyin : Lín Shūháo; born August 23, 1988 in Torrance , California ) is an American basketball player of Taiwanese origin who currently plays for the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). The 1.91 meter tall Lin plays the position of point guard .
Career
Start time
Lin was the captain of the basketball team at his home school in Palo Alto and applied unsuccessfully for an athletic scholarship at one of the major California universities ( UCLA , Stanford , Berkeley ). Instead, he went to Harvard and established himself as one of the best Ivy League players of his year. Nevertheless, he was not signed by any team in the 2010 NBA draft , but later signed by the Golden State Warriors as an undrafted free agent for the minimum salary.
NBA
In Oakland, Lin played 29 games as a substitute, scoring 2.6 points, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
In the following season he was no longer in the Golden State squad. Lin played in the short preseason of the 2011/12 season for the Houston Rockets , but they struck him off the squad before the start of the regular season. Shortly thereafter, he signed a contract with the New York Knicks . This in turn sent Lin in January 2012 in the training league NBA D-League to the Erie Bayhawks , where Lin achieved a triple-double (two-digit values in three statistics) with 28 points in his only game on January 20, 2012 against the Maine Red Claws , whereupon he was brought straight back to the professional Knicks team.
"Linsanity"
On February 4, 2012, Lin caused a sensation after contributing 25 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists to the Knicks' 99:92 victory over the New Jersey Nets . Coach Mike D'Antoni then took him for the first time in his NBA career in the starting five . On February 11, Lin scored 38 points in beating the Los Angeles Lakers, his career record. Three days later, 27 points followed and the game-winning throw against the Toronto Raptors. Lin scored a total of 136 points in his first five appearances on the grid, setting a new NBA record - the previous record holder was Shaquille O'Neal with 129 points from his first five starting appearances.
His appearances quickly attracted a lot of public attention, for which the term Linsanity (a suitcase word from Lin's surname and the English word insanity , in German: madness , insanity ) was coined. Other suitcase words were also invented for Lin, such as Lincredible , Lintendo or Jeremy Win .
In April, it was announced that Lin would need knee surgery and would miss the rest of the season.
2012-2019
During the 2012 summer break, Lin became a restricted free agent , so other clubs could make him a contract offer, but the Knicks had the option to call any offer and keep Lin in New York that way. The Houston Rockets made Lin then available over three years and 25.1 million US dollars . The Knicks decided not to call this offer, so the Rockets' contract with Lin became valid.
Because of its benefits Lin was the team of Shaquille O'Neal in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge of the NBA All-Star Weekend 2012 selected. On February 5, he reached his career record in the game against the Golden State Warriors with five successful three-point throws .
In July 2014, Lin was traded from Houston to the Los Angeles Lakers . After only one year in Los Angeles, he joined the Charlotte Hornets in the summer of 2015 . After a year-long season there, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2016 . On July 12, 2018, the Atlanta Hawks secured the rights to Lin in the trade against Isaïa Cordinier .
In the Free Agency 2018 he was signed by the Toronto Raptors , with whom he won the 2018/19 NBA championship.
CBA
Lin signed with the Beijing Ducks on August 27, 2019 and has since played in the CBA in China.
National team
Lin, who is from Taiwan , received an invitation from the Taiwanese and allegedly also the Chinese national basketball team , but has not yet accepted any.
