career

Tsia was born in Taiwan in 1964, the son of a lawyer. He was sent to the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey by his parents when he was 13 . He later studied economics and law at Yale University . In 1991 he began working as a tax advisor for the legal firm Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City. After 3 years he moved to Private Equity Investments, where he worked as Vice President and General Counsel at Rosecliff, Inc., a small company based in New York. There he looked for a role that would allow him to make decisions instead of providing advice. He moved to Hong Kong in 1995 to join Investor AB where he was responsible for Asian private equity investments.

In this role he met Jack Ma in 1999 in Hangzhou . He was so enthusiastic about Ma's business idea that he decided to quit his previous high-paying job to become a co-founder and employee of his trading platform Alibaba. At the time, each of Alibaba's 18 co-founders - of which Tsai was the only Western-trained member - accepted salaries of just $ 600 a year. He served as the company's chief operating officer, chief financial officer and founding member of the board of directors. He single-handedly built Alibaba's financial and legal structure. In May 2013 he became Executive Vice Chairman of Alibaba. Because of his unique contribution, he is the second largest single shareholder after Ma in Alibaba, which is now one of the most valuable companies in the world.

In 2017, Tsai bought a 49% stake in the Brooklyn Nets basketball franchise .
