Guy Goodes ( Hebrew גיא גודס; * March 13, 1971 in Haifa ) is an Israeli basketball coach and former player. As a player, Goodes won several national championships with Maccabi Tel Aviv and was two-time European Championship finals with the national team . As a coach, he was responsible for Maccabi Rishon LeZion and Hapoel Jerusalem, but celebrated his greatest success as an assistant coach for Maccabi Tel Aviv. Since 2013 Goodes, who was already an Israeli junior selection coach and also holds British citizenship, has been the coaching assistant for the British men's national team .

Career

Player (1986 to 2004)

As a teenager, Goodes joined the Hapoel men's team in his place of birth. At the age of 15 he made his debut for the team in the highest Israeli league Ligat ha'Al . In 1990, the then 19-year-old Goodes finally moved to the record champions Maccabi Tel Aviv, with whom he won the national championship and two national cup competitions in the following seven seasons except for 1993. Despite breaks due to injuries to both knees, Goodes was able to play his way into the hearts of Maccabi fans on the one hand and in the circle of the national team on the other. After he had missed qualifying for the 1992 Olympic Games with the national selection , he took part in a final round for the first time at the 1995 European Basketball Championship . The opening defeat against Italy by two points was decisive for the elimination from the tournament before the quarter-finals despite victories over Sweden and defending champion Germany .

For the 1997/98 season Goodes moved to the second Italian division to Juventus from Caserta , who had played successfully in European Cup at the beginning of the decade. However, they only reached eleventh and third from last place in the second division and the ongoing financial misery finally led to the temporary dissolution of the professional team at the end of the season. After returning to Maccabi Tel Aviv, Goodes won the national double and was again a participant in the 1999 European Championship finals . In the preliminary round, after two opening defeats , Israel reached the intermediate round only through the narrow success over Macedonia , in which they had to decide whether one of the opponents would advance after a victory and a defeat in the final group game against Spain . Goodes, who previously scored 16 points in 19 minutes in the 67:66 win over Slovenia and played a major role in the success, had a rather "quiet" game with three personal points and four assists in the 74:88 defeat against the Spaniards who then made it to the finals and won the silver medal, while Israel was eliminated and also lost the chance to participate in the 2000 Olympic Games.

Even so, Spain was the next career goal for Goodes, who played for Cantabria Lobos from Torrelavega in the 1999/2000 season . The team reached 15th place in the table thanks to the better direct comparison, the relegation in the top division ACB . At the start of the 2000/01 season Goodes played for the Italian first division promoted Cordivari from Roseto degli Abruzzi in the Lega Basket Serie A . After nine championship appearances, he left the team again in December 2000 and went back to his home country, where he played the season for runner-up Maccabi from Ra'anana to the end. In the following season 2001/02 Goodes played for Maccabi Tel Aviv's local rivals Hapoel, with whom he won the championship in the second division Le'umit. He then played for Maccabi from Rishon LeZion for two years , where he finally moved to the coaching bench in 2004.

Trainer (since 2004)

In 2004, Goodes initially worked as assistant coach on the sidelines of Maccabi Rischon LeZion, but soon switched to the position of responsible coach. In the 2005/06 season they reached third place in the table after the regular season and lost the semi-finals in the Final Four tournament against Hapoel Jerusalem with one point difference. Goodes then became Neven Spahija's assistant at Maccabi Tel Aviv, who, however, was unable to follow up on the success of his predecessor Pini Gershon on a European level . In the following season, Oded Kattash and Zvi Sherf also failed one after the other to meet the international demands of the club. When they lost their dominance at the national level at the end of the season and surprisingly lost the championship final against Hapoel Holon , not only Zvi Sherf lost his post, but also Goodes, as his successor Effi Birnbaum brought his assistants to the club.

In 2008, Goodes went to Hapoel Jerusalem as the coach in charge, which for a long time was the second force behind Maccabi Tel Aviv at the national level and was runner-up six times between 1996 and 2007. But the departure of a main sponsor after Goodes' commitment raised doubts as to whether Hapoel could keep up. While they had little success after the failed qualification for the second most important European club competition ULEB Eurocup in the EuroChallenge 2008/09 , they won the national league cup for the first time at the beginning of the season in its third edition . At the end of the season they reached the Final Four as runner-up in the main round, in which they were inferior to Maccabi Haifa in the semifinals . The entry of a new patron paid off the club's debts and after successfully qualifying for the Eurocup, the quarter-finals of the 2009/10 Eurocup were reached . Here they were defeated by the eventual finalist ALBA Berlin from Germany in the first and second leg . As second in the table they lost the Final Four semi-finals again in the national championship, this time against the eventual surprise champion Hapoel Gilboa Galil . The loss of the championship of Maccabi Tel Aviv meant the end of the second term of office of Pini Gershon, who once made Gilboa Galil's predecessor club Galil Elyon the surprise champion in 1993.

This brought David Blatt back to Maccabi Tel Aviv as the responsible coach in 2010. Goodes was again assistant to the record champions under leaf and they won the national double several times and also reached the final in the ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 once in the highest-ranking European competition, which was lost to Panathinaikos Athens . Despite the final defeat in the 2012/13 championship against Maccabi Haifa, Blatt was able to hold onto his post. In the summer of 2011, Goodes was not particularly successful as the Israeli U20 junior team's coach at the Division B tournament, but in the summer of 2013 he was appointed assistant to Joe Prunty , the new national coach of the British men's team . The British selection, one year after the Olympic Games in London, after retirement and the cancellation of long-term national players, was in the process of being rebuilt, surprised at the 2013 European Championship finals and narrowly missed the intermediate round after victories over Germany and Goodes' homeland Israel. In the 2013/14 season Maccabi Tel Aviv was able to reach the Final Four in the Euroleague for the first time in three years after winning the title in the national cup competition. Here they surprisingly won the title after narrow victories over PBK CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid . This was the first title win for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the highest-ranking European competition since the two successes under Pini Gershon in 2004 and 2005.
