Shawn James (born September 10, 1983 in East Berbice-Corentyne , Guyana ) is an American basketball player . After studying in the United States, James turned pro in Israel in 2008 , where he has been playing for record champions Maccabi Tel Aviv since 2011. With this club he won a triple crown from a national double and the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 in 2014 . James then joined the Italian champions EA7 Milan in the Lega Basket Serie A .

Career

James was born in Guyana and came to the United States with his family at the age of seven. There he graduated from high school in Brooklyn , but attended a prep school in Fitchburg (Massachusetts) before starting his studies . Finally he got a place at Northeastern University in Boston, where he played from 2004, among others, with José Juan Barea for the university team Huskies in the America East Conference of the NCAA Division I. With the team he was invited to the National Invitation Tournament 2005, in which, however, they were eliminated in the first round. After the change in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) no participation initially succeeded in a national tournament of the Postseason . Then James moved to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh , where his huskies trainer Ron Everhart had moved. In September 2006, however, he was shot on the Duquesne campus. However, because of the change of university, James was banned from championship games for a year due to the regulations of the NCAA, so that he could cure his injured foot without restrictions. From the 2007/08 season he played for the college team Dukes of Duquesne University in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) of Division I. Despite a positive season record, you could not qualify for a nationwide postseason tournament. Then, at the age of 24, James ended his college career as a junior to become a professional. An excellent shot blocker , he had managed to score five rare triple doubles in games throughout his college career. Despite favorable prognoses, he was not selected in the NBA Draft 2008 by any club of the highest endowed professional league NBA .

Finally, in 2008 James signed his first professional contract with Bnei hascharon from Herzliya in the Israeli top division Ligat ha'Al . In the European club competition Eurocup 2008/09 , however, they were eliminated after the preliminary round. As sixth-placed team after the regular season 2008/09 of the Israeli championship they reached the quarter-final play-offs , but were eliminated there. After only finishing eighth in the 2009/10 season, they had to play in the first play-off round against the supposedly overpowering record champions Maccabi Tel Aviv, who had a great fight over the maximum number of five games. They lost the decisive fifth game with two points difference in Tel Aviv and were eliminated. In the 2010/11 season they improved to fourth place at the end of the season, but this time retired despite home rights in the quarter-finals. Then James was signed by record champions Maccabi Tel Aviv, with whom he has now competed in European club competitions. As a visiting team you could win the ABA League 2011/12. In the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 , last year's finalist Maccabi had to play in the quarter-final play-offs against defending champion Panathinaikos Athens , who were able to prevail again. In the national competitions, however, Maccabi only lost two season games and was able to successfully defend the national double of the championship and cup. In the 2012/13 season by first defended the title in the national cup competition and again reached the quarter-final play-offs in the ULEB Euro League 2012/13 after James in the first round once as " MVP of the week" ( German  Player of the Week ) had been awarded. The quarter-finals were lost in three games against Real Madrid this time. Nevertheless, at the end of the season, James was named one of the ten best players in the competition in the "All-Euroleague 2nd Team". Then Maccabi surprisingly lost the final game against Maccabi Haifa in the national Final Four tournament .

In the 2013/14 season, James returned with injury problems on the intervertebral discs , which had already forced him to take a break in 2012. In January 2014 it was finally decided to undergo surgical treatment, which forced him to take a longer break. Without James, Maccabi managed to defend their title in the national cup competition again, after which they also jumped the quarter-finals and this time reached the Final Four tournament of the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 . Without James, who remained suspended, they surprisingly defeated PBK CSKA Moscow in the semifinals by one point and were finally able to beat Real Madrid in the final after extra time. This was Maccabi's first success in this competition in nine years. At the end of the season, the team also took the title back from defending champion Maccabi Haifa in the championship final and won a triple crown . After a successful season James signed a contract with the Italian champions EA7 Emporio Armani in Milan in the Lega Basket Serie A .
