Derek Raivio (born November 9, 1984 in Antwerp , Belgium ) is a former American basketball player who also played three seasons in the German basketball league and other leagues in Europe.

Career

Raivio's father Rick was a professional basketball player in Europe, Derek first went to school in France before the family returned to the United States in 1992.

The 1.86 m tall and 80 kg point guard played during his studies in Washington state for the college team Bulldogs of Gonzaga University in the NCAA Division I. In his senior year 2007, he was voted athlete of the year at his college. After his college days he moved to Germany to join the then cup winner RheinEnergie Köln . After a first filing for bankruptcy in early 2008 by the Cologne club, Raivio moved to the new season for league competitor TBB Trier , where he played the following two seasons. After Henrik Rödl was signed as coach for the 2010/11 season, Raivio no longer played a role in the new concept and plans of the Trier club.

He then returned to the United States and received a contract with Erie BayHawks in the American D-League for the 2010/2011 season. In 2011 he moved within the league from the BayHawks to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants .

His strengths were his free throw with a high percentage of hits, which was always around 90% during his college days and in the basketball league, and a good three-point throw, which was between 36% and 42% in the BBL. Raivio was appointed to the southern selection for the BBL All-Star Game in 2009 and took third place in the three-point competition on the All-Star weekend in 2010.

Raivio later played in Japan and in European countries including Belgium, the Czech Republic, France and Portugal. After the end of the 2016/17 game year, he finished his basketball career and started working in the United States in the medical technology field.
