James R. Gillingham (born August 20, 1981 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian basketball player . Gillingham, who is also a citizen of the Dominican Republic , played as a professional between 2004 and 2010 in the German basketball league for TBB Trier after studying in the United States . After the end of his engagement in Trier, Gillingham no longer signed a new professional contract as a basketball player and was later regional sales manager for a food manufacturer in his Canadian homeland, where he also worked as a basketball youth coach.
Career
Gillingham went to study from his Canadian homeland to the United States at Bradley University in Peoria (Illinois) , where he played basketball for the Braves college team in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) of the NCAA from 2000 to 2004 . In its freshman year, the Braves lost the final of the 2001 championship tournament of MVC by six points against the Sycamores of Indiana State University . In the following years, the Braves could not qualify for the national NCAA finals . Gillingham was also called up here for the first time in the Canadian national team. It was enough for him later, however, only to a final participation in the American basketball championship 2005 , in which Canada took a disappointing ninth place.
After the end of his NCAA career, Gillingham signed a contract with the German first division club TBB Trier in the basketball league in 2004 , which he was ultimately to be loyal to after contract extensions for six years and soon rose to the team captaincy. During this time, however, Trier could never qualify for the play-offs of the best eight teams for the German championship. In the basketball Bundesliga 2005/06 they failed as ninth in the table only because of the poorer direct comparison to move into the final round. Otherwise they mostly played for relegation, which was not achieved in the 2007/08 basketball Bundesliga . Only after purchasing a “ wild card ” did the team stay in the top division. In addition to the sporting stagnation, there were increasing financial problems, which culminated in a general wage cut for the players in the basketball Bundesliga in 2009/10 . Although, according to the club's management, this was done in consultation with the games, there was resentment and conflicts that even captain Gillingham could not prevent. In retrospect, Gillingham also commented negatively on this episode at the end of his time in Trier. After the end of the season, the Trier team hired a new coach, Henrik Rödl , who introduced a change in personnel with a different concept, as a result of which captain Gillingham was no longer given a new contract. Gillingham then no longer signed a new contract as a professional basketball player. His sister Leah later married Nate Doornekamp , who was Gillingham's teammate in Trier at the beginning of his professional career.
