Andreas Wenzl (born February 7, 1993 in Kuchen , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German basketball player . Wenzl was trained in the youth teams of the German first division club Ratiopharm Ulm and already had his first two appearances in the top German division in the 2009/10 basketball league as a 16-year-old. Then Wenzl was mainly active in the third highest division ProB with a double license . After protracted knee problems, he initially announced his retirement from competitive sports in January 2013 at the age of 20, before he ventured a new start with the first division club TBB Trier in the summer of 2013. After the summer of 2014 with the A2 national team in the People's Republic of China , at the beginning of the 2014/15 season he again had meniscus problems on his other leg and was no longer used during the season. His brother Michael , who was two years older than him, played after starting his career in Ulm from 2014 to 2016 for Hamburg Towers in the second-highest division ProA .

Career

Wenzl moved to the ratiopharm Academy and played there for the youth team of the German first division club from Ulm in the youth basketball league (NBBL). As a 16-year-old, like his two years older brother Michael, he had his first two appearances in the top German division in the basketball Bundesliga 2009/10 . In the following, however, in contrast to his older brother, Wenzl only played alongside the NBBL in the Ulm “ farm team ” Youngstars from Weißenhorn in the third-highest division ProB . In the ProB 2011/12 , Wenzl made twelve appearances in the men's team with just under ten minutes, when the Weißenhorn team was only able to secure relegation after deducting points in the play-downs . Recurring injury problems on the meniscus in the left knee and an operation at the end of 2012 made Wenzl believe that he would end his professional career as a basketball player in January 2013 before his 20th birthday, after he had not played in the 2012/13 season was.

In the summer of 2013, Wenzl surprised everyone with the announcement that he would try again under coach Henrik Rödl at first division competitor Treveri Basketball (TBB) from Trier . After five appearances at the beginning of the season, however, Wenzl was only used again in the last three games of the basketball Bundesliga 2013/14 . Nevertheless, A2 national trainer Rödl and his brother Michael took him to several assignments in the summer of 2014, including at an international tournament in China. After another three missions with the TBB at the beginning of the 2014/15 basketball Bundesliga , renewed meniscus problems on the other knee forced Wenzl to take a break again, but this time Wenzl did not want to resign despite another operation with a lengthy rehabilitation phase. The TBB Trier, however, had to accept the sporting descent after the 2014/15 season after a bankruptcy.

In September 2016, he returned to the field in a RheinStars Cologne shirt after a long injury break. He played for Cologne until the end of the 2016/17 season.
