Robert Maras (born October 20, 1978 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a former German basketball player and coach. The 2.15 m tall Maras played in the center position.

life and career

Club career

Robert Maras was born to Croatian parents in Freiburg and grew up there. His basketball career began in 1996 with the Bundesliga second division club USC Freiburg. In 1998 Maras moved with a double license to the Bundesliga top club ALBA Berlin and its cooperation partner for youth work TuS Lichterfelde . With TuS Lichterfelde, he made it to the top basketball league as a leading player in 2000.

For the 2000/2001 season he moved to the Skyliners Frankfurt and quickly developed into the team's top performer. In December 2003, his development was set back for a time when he tore a cruciate ligament and was only able to watch his team's German championship title win from the bench. In 2002 he made it to the Dallas Mavericks Summer League team , but not made it to the NBA .

At the beginning of 2005 he switched to the Spanish first division club Caja San Fernando Sevilla during the current 2004/2005 season . In the stronger Spanish league , he promised greater opportunities. The following season he moved to the Spanish Llanera Menorca and after 6 games for Menorca his journey continued in November 2005 to the second division club Palma Aqua Magica.

For the 2006/2007 season Maras moved to the Gießen 46ers in the basketball league . From 2007 Maras was under contract with the Greek first division club Egaleo Athens . In March 2008 he moved to the Spanish second division club Unión Baloncesto LA PALMA during the current 2007/2008 season , before returning to Giessen in the summer of 2008, where he signed a two-year contract. After a year the contract was terminated. For the 2009/10 season Maras moves to FC Bayern Munich where he signed a two-year contract. Robert Maras did not receive a new contract in Munich for the 2011/2012 season.

In July 2011, the regional league team München Basket announced the commitment of Maras. Maras wanted to end his career there and at the same time find a start into professional life. At the end of November 2011, the club announced that Maras had to end his sporting career for good due to knee problems. Maras played four league games for the regional division.

Trainer

Until mid-2013, Maras was the coach of the 2nd men's team and the U18 of MTSV Schwabing . He then switched to the coaching position of the regional league team TSV Oberhaching-Deisenhofen , where he left in the summer of 2016 after a three-year term, but then took on the tasks of assistant coach and coach of the second men's team.

National team

At the 2001 Summer Universiade in Beijing he competed for the first time with the German A2 national team and in the end came in very good fourth place. Maras convinced and was as a result at the 2002 World Cup in Indianapolis in the German national team squad. In just 35 minutes of play, he made 24 points. He was also on the national team at the 2003 European Championship in Sweden .

At the European Championships in 2005, he won the silver medal with the German team. For the basketball world championship in 2006 he was not appointed to the team by national coach Dirk Bauermann .
