Tyrone Gerard Ellis Jr. (Born October 5, 1977 in Dallas , Texas ) is a native of the United States , former basketball player , who has also had Georgian citizenship since 2006 . After studying in his home country, Ellis first played for a year in the newly founded NBA Development League (D-League) before moving to Europe in 2002. From 2003 to 2005 he played successfully with the Opel Skyliners from Frankfurt in the German basketball league , with which he was able to become German champions in 2004 . After seasons in Turkey and Italy , he played in the Spanish ACB league from 2007 to 2012 . Since 2012 he has worked as an assistant coach at various clubs in the D-League.

Career

Ellis studied at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany in the US state of Oklahoma , whose sports teams in the NAIA are organized. After completing his studies, he got a contract with the Flight s from Huntsville (Alabama) in the newly founded Development League of the NBA . After one season, he moved to Europe and played in the 2002-03 season for the basketball Club CB Sant Josep from the Catalan Girona in the Spanish top flight.

Frankfurt Skyliners (2003 to 2005)

In 2003 he moved to the top German league for the Frankfurt Skyliners. With the Skyliners he won the German championship in five games against GHP Bamberg in the 2003/04 BBL season . This was the first German championship in 15 years that was not won by Alba Berlin or the record champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen , who had won the title seven times in a row. In addition, the German cup final was reached, which was lost to RheinEnergie Cologne . In the following season, in which Ellis was injured for a large part of the season up to the championship play-offs , the defending champion was again able to reach the final series of the championship, which this time was lost to GHP Bamberg in five games. In the top European division ULEB Euroleague 2004/05 they were eliminated after four wins in fourteen games in the first group stage.

Turkey and Italy (2005 to 2007)

After a detour during the summer break in the ABA , he joined the Turkish club Beşiktaş Cola Turka for the 2005/06 season, with which he was eliminated in the national championship semifinals against defending champion Efes Pilsen Istanbul . Subsequently, he has a preliminary contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA, which was however dissolved again before the start of the season. Gordon Herbert , his former coach at the Skyliners Frankfurt, then brought him to the Georgian national basketball team as the Georgian national coach , which is why he was granted Georgian citizenship in 2006. In the 2006/07 season he played in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A with Eldo Napoli, with whom he was eliminated in the quarter-finals of national championship and cup competitions. With the southern Italians he played again in the ULEB Euroleague 2006/07 .

League ACB (2007 to 2012)

In 2007 he returned to the Spanish ACB league and signed a contract with Cajasol from Seville . It was not until the 2009/10 season that they qualified for the play-offs for the Spanish championship, in which they were eliminated in the first round. In 2009, Ellis won Division B of the European national teams with the Georgian national team and thus achieved promotion to Division A, which qualified for qualification for the 2011 European Championship in Lithuania . In the 2010/11 season Ellis played another season in the ACB League with Asefa Estudiantes from the capital Madrid. In the Eurocup 2010/11 they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against KK Cedevita from the Croatian Zagreb . In the following season he joined in November CB Lucentum from Alicante , with whom he reached a play-off place at the end of the season. In the play-offs, however, they were eliminated in the first round against eventual champions FC Barcelona Regal . Alicante then waived another first division season in favor of CB Gran Canaria and withdrew to the second division LEB Oro .

Trainer Assistant (since 2012)

After leaving Alicante, Ellis ended his active career in 2012 and became an assistant coach for the Tulsa 66ers in the D-League. After a year he moved to the 2013/14 season for league rivals Bighorns from Reno (Nevada) .
