Hervé Barulea (also: Hervé Baruléa, born July 29, 1947 in Thil , Département Meurthe-et-Moselle in Lorraine ), known by his stage name Baru , is a French comic artist .

Baru grew up in Lorraine as the son of a Breton woman and an Italian immigrant. His father was a worker, the family lived in simple circumstances. Baru discovered his drawing skills late. After training to be a sports teacher, he began drawing comics in the 1970s. He still practiced the profession of sports teacher until the early 1980s.

style

Baru based himself on José Antonio Muñoz and Jean-Marc Reiser and developed an independent drawing style, which is mainly characterized by the representation of the people. Broad shoulders dominate partially grotesquely deformed bodies, the faces are strongly typified, reduced to the essentials like a caricature . In movement and language, the body and facial expressions distort a lot. Backgrounds and objects are drawn in a detailed and naturalistic way. The position of the speech bubbles often varies depending on the position of the actor. A speech bubble can also be located at the bottom of the panel or between two panels, but it is always in close proximity to the person. Baru uses only a few lines of movement, he implements movement and speed by changing perspectives and unusual angles. Often a panel only shows a section or a single detail, deliberately slowing down the dynamic.

Career

The autodidact's first publications appeared in the comic magazine Pilote . The first album, the first volume of the series Quéquettes Blues , appeared in 1984 and was awarded in 1985 to the International Comic Festival of Angoulême the Prix Alfred for the best debut . Further albums were published by Dargaud and the Futuropolis- Verlag. The album Cours, camarade! was published in 1988, it is the story of a Polish-speaking Frenchman and a Moroccan immigrant who, after spending a night with two sisters, flee across France from his racist brother and his friends. As hitchhikers and with stolen vehicles, the two finally reach Marseille , only to turn their backs on France with a crossing to North Africa.

Baru received the Prix Alph'Art for the best album in 1991 at the Angoulême comic festival for the album Le Chemin de l'Amérique . The story of an Algerian boxer takes place around 1960 and was written by Jean-Marc Thévent . The successful boxer wins the French championship and becomes European champion. Because of his origins, he is not respected despite his sporting successes and ultimately becomes the plaything between Algerian freedom fighters and French politicians.

The Japanese manga publisher Kodansha began looking for Western cartoonists in 1991 who would create comics for the manga magazine Morning and thus expand the magazine's offerings. However, the comics should be adapted to the Japanese reading habits, they had to have a much larger size than European albums in order to be published in individual episodes in the magazine. Baru was also one of the selected artists and went to Japan to see the motifs from Cours, camarade! for L'Autoroute du soleil to take up and expand. From 1991 to 1994 he worked on the story, which, with its black and white drawings on 430 pages, depicts a chase across France. The main characters are again persecuted by right-wing extremists. This story does not end with a departure from France, the pursuer is killed in a cinematic showdown and the two persecuted return home. Over 400 pages, Baru sensitively shows the development of the two main characters, who learn a lot about themselves and life during the escape. He takes up a number of typical Manga stylistic devices, for example individual scenes are divided into the smallest time units, but the series was not successful in Japan. The French translation was published by Casterman in 1995 and was awarded the Prix Alph'Art for best album.

With Bonne Année in 1999, Baru tried for the first time a glimpse into the future and had the comic play at the turn of the year 2014/2015 in France after right-wing extremists took over government. His 2005 comic L'Enragé takes up the theme of an earlier publication and tells of the rise of a boxer of Polish descent.

Central themes in Baru's work are violence, everyday situations in a working class environment, the problems of immigrants and young people of foreign origin and the dangers of right-wing extremist ways of thinking.
