The DEL season 2021/22 is the 28th season of the German ice hockey league , officially PENNY DEL, the highest league in German ice hockey . The season started on September 9, 2021 and will end with the last final game on May 5, 2022 at the latest.

As in previous years, the DEL games will be broadcast by Magenta Sport and Sport 1 .

The fifth DEL Winter Game will take place during the season . The Cologne Sharks and Adler Mannheim will meet on January 1, 2022 in Cologne's Rheinenergiestadion . The game originally planned for January 9, 2021 has been postponed for a year due to the COVID19 pandemic .

Attendees

The league plays with 15 teams. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , relegation from the DEL was suspended in 2021 . In contrast, the master of the DEL2 in 2021 , the Bietigheim Steelers , rose to the DEL.

Mode and appointments

The teams will play a double round (four times each against each other team) from September 9, 2021. From January 31 to February 20, 2022 the league will be paused due to the Olympic ice hockey tournament . The main round ends on March 27, 2022. The teams in places 7 to 10 play pre-play-offs in best-of-three mode , the winners advance to the quarter-finals like the teams in places 1 to 6. From the quarter-finals onwards, best-of-five is played. The last final is scheduled for May 5, 2022. The 14th and 15th of the main round will descend athletically into the DEL2. The 14th is the successor if the DEL2 master does not receive the DEL license 2022/23.

Main round table

Three points are awarded to a team for a win after normal playing time; if the game is a draw after 60 minutes, both teams receive one point, and the winner of the five-minute extra time (only with three against three field players) or after a necessary penalty shoot-out receives another point credited. If a team loses in regular time, it will not receive any points.
