Al Harrington (actor)

Al Harrington (born as: Tausau Ta'a ; born December 12, 1935 in Pago Pago , American Samoa ; † September 21, 2021 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) was an American actor and historian .

Life

Harrington was born in Samoa as Tausau Ta'a and spent his early childhood there with his maternal grandparents.

At the age of three, his mother Lela Suʻa Paia brought him to Honolulu , Hawaii . She worked there as a nurse. Harrington and his mother lived in Halawa Housing (an area of social housing in Honolulu, near Pearl Harbor ). Harrington's mother married Roy Milbur Harrington, whose family name he adopted in 1952.

Harrington was a good student and a good athlete. He received a scholarship that enabled him to attend the Punahou School in Honolulu. Through its sporting achievements he became the first high school - All-American from Hawaii . Eventually he won a scholarship to Stanford University , where he studied history .

After graduating, Harrington returned to Hawaii. There he married and became a history teacher at the Punahou School. On the side, Harrington appeared in a lūʻau in Waikīkī . During one of these appearances, he was discovered by Ted Thorpe, one of the casting directors of the television series Hawaii Five-Zero .

From 1969, Harrington received roles in the television series Hawaii Five-Zero. He played

In 1972, difficulties with the actor Zulu led to his dismissal. His role 'Kono Kalakaua' was replaced from season 5 by ' Detective Ben Kokua'. Harrington received this role. He played in this role from 1972 (season 5, episode 1) to 1975 (season 7, episode 24) in a total of 59 episodes.

Harrington had a show in Waikiki, the "Al Harrington Show", for 20 years (1972-1992). He was nicknamed "The South Pacific Man". He performed with Donald Tai Loy Ho (Don Ho), Dick Jensen, Danny Kaleikini and Moe Keale. In 1992 Harrington moved first to Utah , then to Los Angeles . He played Indian roles in several films .

In 2005 he returned to Hawaii. Here he worked as an educator, actor and healer. He became a spokesman for AlohaCare (a health service in Hawaii).

When the remake Hawaii Five-0 began to be shot in 2010, he was given the role of 'Mamo Kahike' in this series. He performed in this role:

Harrington was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . He has two sons.

Trivia

In 1954 in high school , Harrington called himself Alvin Ta'a.

Harrington was the only actor to appear in both the original 1968 Hawaii Five-Zero series and the 2010 remake Hawaii Five-0 . Since James MacArthur's death in 2010, Harrington was the last surviving male actor in the original series Hawaii Five-Zero.
