Christl Wiemer

Christl Wiemer (born December 10, 1929 as Christl Matthes in Halle an der Saale ; † December 10, 2021 in Freital-Pesterwitz ) was a German film director .

life and work

In 1947 Christl Wiemer began studying at the Burg Giebichenstein art school . She received lessons from Walter Funkat, among others . Early on, she made contact with later companions such as Klaus Georgi , Katja Georgi , Otto Sacher and Helmut Barkowsky . During her studies she also met her future husband Hans-Ulrich Wiemer (1929–2012), with whom she was married until his death. After completing her studies, she formed the graphic artist community "We Five" with the people mentioned. In 1954 the group moved to Berlin to the DEFA studio for popular science films , where they worked togetherAnimated film The story of the piggy bank realized. In 1955 the group went to the newly founded DEFA studio for animated films in Dresden .

In 1956 Christl Wiemer made her first own film as a director with Petz, the Bear . In 1958 she worked for Thumbelina’s Adventure for the first time with the painter Walter Rehn (1921–2004), who became her most important artistic companion throughout her entire career. Based on a template by the writer Sarah Kirsch , the only film that Christl Wiemer made together with her husband was made in 1967 with Die Drunkene Sonne . Wiemer filmed fabrics by the writer Werner Heiduczek several times , including Jana and the little star (1971), The lantern in front of the bamboo hut (1972), Vom Hühnchen, who wanted to marry the king (1974), The little ugly bird (1974) and The cock and his king (1979). Based on a material by the Turkish poet Nâzım Hikmet, he created The Cloud in Love in 1975 . She succeeded in another literary adaptation, this time based on a children's book by Alfred Könner and Klaus Ensikat , with Kieselchen , for which Reinhard Lakomy and Angelika Mann sang songs.

After the reunification and the liquidation of DEFA , Christl Wiemer made no further films. For some time she worked as a director at a children's theater.

On her 92nd birthday, Wiemer died in her house in the Pesterwitz district of Freital.
