The parliamentary election in Greenland in 2021 was Inatsisartut's 14th election . It had to take place no later than four years after the 2018 election , i.e. by April 24, 2022. On February 16, 2021, Parliament set the date on April 6, 2021.

Some international media ascribed importance to the election far beyond the borders of Greenland , as it was about the question of whether rare earths should be mined in Greenland in the future . This could break the previous world market dominance of the People's Republic of China . While the Inuit Ataqatigiit promised in advance to stop the project, it was mainly supported by the Siumut and the Demokraatit .

The Inuit Ataqatigiit won the election with the second best result in party history. The previously ruling Siumut lost the election despite easy wins. The Democrats halved their result and became the biggest loser in the election. The two parties, Nunatta Qitornai and Suleqatigiissitsisut , founded in 2018, lost their only seat and thus left parliament.

Suffrage

The 31 members of the Inatsisartut are elected in multiple constituencies using proportional representation . The seat assignment is done according to the D'Hondt method .

Starting position

Kim Kielsen , Acting Prime Minister

After the parliamentary elections in 2018, several coalition governments were formed and then broke up again. With the exception of the Inuit Ataqatigiit and the Suleqatigiissitsisut , each party had been in government for at least a period. After Erik Jensen took over the chairmanship of Siumut from Prime Minister Kim Kielsen in November 2020, the party realigned . While the previous Kielsen VI cabinet supported the planned Kuannersuit mining project, in which rare earths and uranium are to be mined near Narsaq in the Kvanefjeld mine , the new party executive was more cautious. Due to the worsening power struggle within the party, the Demokraatit terminated government cooperation in February 2021, as they could no longer clearly identify the Siumut's position on the Kuannersuit project. The opposition parties Inuit Atqatigiit, Demokraatit, Partii Naleraq and Atassut then submitted the bill for new elections, which was approved after several hours of debate. The date was set for April 6, 2021. For the first time, the parliamentary and local elections should take place together. The discussion about the Kvanefjeld mine, which is believed to be one of the world's largest deposits of rare earth metals, also attracted worldwide attention, as Western countries in particular hope to reduce their dependence on rare earths from the People's Republic of China.

According to the polls, the two youngest and smallest parties, Suleqatigiissitsisut and Nunatta Qitornai, will lose their only parliamentary seat. consequences

31 MPs were elected to the 14th Inatsisartut . Múte B. Egede announced talks with all parties, which should last until around April 15. The Naleraq was open to a collaboration that would mean a slim majority. On April 9, the Democraatit ended talks with the Inuit Ataqatigiit on their part, while Siumut, Naleraq and Atassut continued them.
