Saarloq [ ˈsɑːɬːɔq ] (according to the old spelling Sârdloĸ ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Qaqortoq in the municipality of Kujalleq .
location
Saarloq is located on an island of the same name only about 14.4 hectares in size in the middle of an archipelago on the south coast of the Kangerluarsorujuk fjord . On its north side is Eqalugaarsuit 10 km northeast . The municipal capital Qaqortoq is 19 km to the north .
history
Saarloq was founded in 1853 as Udsted .
From 1911 Saarloq was a separate municipality to which the residential area Qaarsoq still belonged. Although Kangermiutsiaat was also within the municipality boundary , this was added to the municipality of Julianehaab. The municipality was part of the 4th district electoral district of South Greenland.
In 1919, 85 people lived in Saarloq, who lived in 16 houses. The Udsteds administrator's apartment came from the year it was founded and was comparatively small with only one living room. Also in 1853 the Speckhaus was built, which was almost 50 m² in size and had a provision room on the top floor. There was an almost 40 m² cooperage that was built in 1897 and had a shop on the top floor. All three buildings were made of stone. There was also a powder house in Saarloq. The school chapel measured around 50 m² and was made of wood and was occupied by an unskilled catechist. In addition, a midwife worked in the village. In addition, there was a meeting house in Saarloq, which was atypical for the times, that was built as a half-timbered building with peat walls. All buildings were described as poorly built. Among the residents were 15 hunters and four fishermen who lived mainly from seal hunting.
In 1928 a new shop was built and later Saarloq got some fish houses. In 1950 there were 114 people living in Saarloq and in 1960 the number had risen to 185. From then on it decreased and in 1970 it was 164 people.
economy
Like many Greenlandic villages, Saarloq lives from hunting. Seals , whales , waterfowl and fish are all caught in the area. Saarloq had a fish processing factory until the 1990s, but due to the strong migration it had to be closed, so that processing now takes place in Eqalugaarsuit and Qaqortoq.
Infrastructure and supply
Saarloq does have a quay, but the shallow water makes it difficult to use. The location can also be approached from the air via the Saarloq heliport . There are no roads in the village.
Pilersuisoq has a branch in Saarloq that supplies the town with goods. Nukissiorfiit supplies Saarloq with electricity via a power plant that was renovated from 2007 to 2010, including power lines, and with drinking water via a seawater desalination plant. Garbage is deposited in a landfill. A waste incineration plant was purchased, but could not be installed, so that it now acts as a reserve for the other places in the area. A ramp for garbage disposal is also in need of renovation.
Development
Saarloq had 29 houses in 2016, 4 of which were empty. Four buildings are protected, including an old building that belongs to Pilersuisoq but has not been used, and a museum was being considered there.
There is a church with a cemetery renovated in 2003. The school in Saarloq is closed due to a lack of students. There are also two playgrounds in need of renovation. A workshop was destroyed in a storm in 2010. A small old people's home was opened for the high number of old people in the village.
