Hoàng Xuân Sính
Hoàng Xuân Sính (born September 8, 1933 in Làng Cót ) is a Vietnamese mathematician.
Hoang Xuan Sinh is the daughter of a fabric manufacturer and, after graduating in English and French in Hanoi in 1951, went to Paris to study mathematics and graduated from the Agrégation in Toulouse in 1959. She then taught mathematics at the Hanoi Pedagogical College. In 1967 she was one of the students of Alexander Grothendieck when he visited North Vietnam for a month and gave lectures there at the university evacuated outside Hanoi. Sinh stayed in contact with Grothendieck by letter and Grothendieck suggested a dissertation topic. In 1975 she received her doctorate from Grothendieck at the University of Paris VII (Denis Diderot) (Gr-catégories). In it she introduced 2 groups (Gr categories) (a group or groupoid concept in higher category theory). The doctorate took place on the occasion of her stay in France 1974/75 (she also attended the International Congress of Mathematicians 1974 in Vancouver). In addition to Grothendieck, the examination committee included Henri Cartan , Laurent Schwartz and Michel Zisman.
After her return, she received a full professorship in Hanoi (as the first woman in Vietnam in the natural sciences and technology). In 1988 she founded the private Thang Long University in Hanoi (the first private university in unified Vietnam).
In 2003 she received the order of the Palmes académiques. She was named Teacher of the People in Vietnam (the highest educational award in the country).
