Eqalugaarsuit [ ɜˌqaluˈɣɑːsːuitˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Eĸalugârssuit ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the municipality of Kujalleq in the district of Qaqortoq .

location

Eqalugaarsuit is located on the south island of the island of Kangeq at the fjord complex Kangerluarsorujuk , which is also eleven kilometers southwest of Saarloq , and at the end of the fjord are the shepherds' settlements of Kangerluarsorujuk and Kangerluarsorujuup Qinngua . The district capital Qaqortoq is twelve kilometers northwest. Eqalugaarsuit consists of an approximately 500 m wide mainland section and an approximately 600 × 100 m peninsula, the Eqalugaarsuit Nuuat (Cape of Eqalugaarsuit).

history

Eqalugaarsuit was settled in the 1920s. Because of the good fishing grounds, a 240 m² fish house was built in Eqalugaarsuit, which was three times the size of the one in Saarloq, whereby the yields ultimately could not do justice to the size of the building. In 1930 there were 26 inhabitants and in 1940 there were almost twice as many. In 1947 a school chapel was built. In 1950 the number had risen to 161 people. In 1952 Eqalugaarsuit received Udsted status . In 1963, 216 people lived in the village. But by 1970 it had dropped to 157.

economy

The biggest economic factor in Eqalugaarsuit, according to the name, is fishing. The fish factory has been closed since 2006, but it was accompanied by an attempt to set up a seaweed drying factory as food and sheep feed. This was abandoned after just a few years, and instead, from 2010, the factory was set up to produce dried fish from Uugaq and cod and to produce roe from wolffish . Now only dried fish is produced. In addition, sealskin brought to Qaqortoq and sold there. Eqalugaarsuit also offers capacity for tourism .

Infrastructure and supply

There are several port structures in the village: a pontoon jetty, a fixed jetty and a quay for the fish factory. The paths in Eqalugaarsuit consist of old asphalt, gravel and gravel or, more recently, tiled sidewalks. There are no cars, the only motorized vehicles are tractors, quads and a crane. The Eqalugaarsuit heliport on the peninsula enables air traffic with the surrounding area.

Garbage is burned or dumped, hazardous waste is brought to Denmark via Qaqortoq. Nukissiorfiit supplies the place with a diesel power station renovated in 2003 and electricity lines renewed in 2006. A small lake through which the Eqalugaarsuit Kuuat (river of Eqalugaarsuit) flows has been supplying the town with drinking water since 2016. A small waterworks is to be built to improve the water quality. Oil heaters warm the houses in Eqalugaarsuit.

Development

Eqalugaarsuit has a Pilersuisoq branch. A private shop has since closed. There is a church, a cemetery, a service building, a fire station , a retirement home, a football field and the Daanialiup Atuarfia school , where four students were taught in 2016. Almost a third of the buildings in Eqalugaarsuit are empty.

Population development

The population of Eqalugaarsuit is falling sharply. In the past 25 years the population has more than tripled.
