Qaarsoq [ ˈqɑːsːɔq ] (according to the old spelling K'aersoĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Qaqortoq in the municipality of Kujalleq .

location

Qaarsoq is located on the southern tip of a peninsula, which in turn is in the south of a peninsula in the area between the Alluitsup Kangerlua and the Igalikup Kangerlua . 8.8 km west-northwest is Saarloq, the closest town.

history

Qaarsoq was already inhabited before 1850. The place originally belonged to the catchment area of the Moravian Brethren .

From 1911 Qaarsoq belonged to the Saarloq municipality.

In 1919 71 residents were counted who lived in 12 houses, and it was found that the houses were extremely well built. There was a school that the local catechist, Aron Stak, had built on his own account so that he could teach. The residents, who included 13 hunters and two fishermen, made a living mainly from seal hunting.

In 1930, 68 people lived in Qaarsoq. The number then fell rapidly and in 1946 only 26 people lived at the place of residence. In the same year he was officially left. Afterwards, five to ten people lived on the spot who farmed sheep before Qaarsoq was completely abandoned in 1951.
