Isortoq [ iˈsɔtːɔq ] (according to the old spelling Isortoĸ ) is a Greenland reindeer herding settlement in the Qaqortoq district in the Kujalleq municipality .

location

Isortoq is located on a fjord of the same name , which forms a bay through the Isortup Qeqertaa . The fjord is part of a complex system of fjords and straits, which are separated by islands and which together flow into the Sermilik . The settlement is isolated 30 km northwest of Qassimiut and 54 km southeast of Arsuk . The nearest town is Narsaq 80 km east.

history

Reindeer herding began in Greenland in 1952 when some reindeer from Scandinavia were brought to Itinnera near Kapisillit . Of these, around 150 animals were brought to the Sermilik area by Ole Josef Semion Kristiansen in 1973. In 1988 the number of reindeer in the area had increased to around 800 animals. In the same year the Icelander Stefán Hrafn Magnússon began to take part in reindeer herding in South Greenland after five years of preparation. It was not until 1990 that the reindeer farm was moved to Isortoq, where three houses, a power station and a waterworks were built. The following winter the herd already consisted of around 2,000 animals, four years later there were 5,000 reindeer. In 2015, about 1200 reindeer lived near Isortoq after the slaughter, about 250 animals now live on the island of Tuttutooq near Narsaq and almost 100 animals have migrated to the area near Ivittuut and gone wild there. Isortoq is the only active reindeer herding settlement in Greenland today.

Population development

Isortoq had a population of six at the last census. The last known population of the shepherd settlements was for 2013. Isortoq is statistically listed under "Farms near Qaqortoq".
