Kapisillit [ kapiˈsiɬːitˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Kapisigdlit ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the Nuuk district in the Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq .

location

Kapisillit is located on the south bank of a bay with many islands at the end of Kapisillit Kangerluat . The Neriunaq farm is three kilometers northwest on the opposite bank and Itinnera is nine kilometers southwest . The next larger town is the capital Nuuk , which is about 75 km west-southwest. Kapisillit lies comparatively deep inland for Greenlandic conditions with 90 km to the coast. The narrow Innannguup Saava plain near the village separates the Kangerluat Kapisillit from the Kangersuneq fjord , which forms the rear part of the Nuup Kangerlua .

history

On July 12, 1926, in Grønlands Landsråd, the colonial administrator Christian Simony's proposal was discussed to move the residents of Uummannaq to the end of Kapisillit Kangerluat. He justified this with the good hunting grounds there, which were already used by the residents for salmon fishing and for reindeer and fox hunting. Landsfoged Knud Oldendow agreed with Simony's remarks. The hunters and fishermen in the village also told us that relocation would be very convenient. The matter was adjourned to the next meeting in order to hear further opinions. The subject was taken up again on July 28, 1927. The collective opinions of the parish council, the population, the doctor and the pastor were presented. Since the population resisted resettlement, this was ultimately rejected, which was confirmed again in 1928.

Despite this, the two brothers Jakob and Abia Jakobsen settled here in 1927. In 1930 Kapisillit already had 74 inhabitants. Presumably, numerous residents from Uummannaq had moved here, as the number of residents there had almost halved since 1918. On April 1, 1939 Kapisillit was named Udsted and capital of the new Kapisillit community. In 1939 a store and warehouse was built and in 1940 an apartment was built for the Udsteds administrator. During the 1940s the population rose to 161 people. In 1948 a school was built. The building materials came from refugee barracks that had been used for German refugees in Denmark. Several fish houses were built, which had a total area of 504 m². In the following decades, the production consisted largely of cod processed into salt fish , but also of black halibut , even if the place name means " salmon ", referring to the Kapisillit Kuuat River , Greenland's only salmon spawning site . In 1960 there were already 302 people living in the village. On December 12, 1960 Kapisillit received a church. In 1970 Kapisillit only had 187 inhabitants. Several attempts have been made to keep sheep and reindeer in the area. Some of the residents of Kapisillit are descended from Sami that were brought to Itinnera with the reindeer in the 1950s.

Infrastructure and supply

Kapisillit can be reached by ship all year round. A Pilersuisoq branch supplies the residents with goods and also includes the post office. Nukissiorfiit is responsible for the electricity and water supply. Depending on the type, garbage is incinerated, landfilled or shipped to Nuuk, while sewage is discharged into the sea.

Development

There is a primary school in Kapisillit, which also includes a library. Students can then attend secondary school in Nuuk. There is also a kindergarten and a nursing home. The infirmary also includes a dentist's office. The service building contains sanitary facilities. There is also an office building, a meeting house and a church.

Population development

Kapisillit had around 1000 residents in the 1950s due to the rich fishing grounds. Since then, the number has fallen sharply due to poorer yields. In the last 40 years alone, the number of inhabitants has decreased by three. Today Kapisillit is the smallest village in the municipality.
