Uummannaq [ ˈuːˌmːanːɑq ] (according to the old spelling Ũmánaĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Nuuk district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Uummannaq is located on the west coast of a small island of the same name in a wide sea area where numerous fjords flow, including the Kapisillit Kangerluat . To the west is the island of Qeqertarsuaq (Storø), separated by the Ikinngua Strait . Kapisillit is 26 km to the east and Nuuk is 57 km to the southwest.

history

Uummannaq was founded in 1861 as a mission station for the Moravian Brethren in order to be accessible to Greenlanders further away from Neu-Herrnhut . The residents were partly from Neu-Herrnhut and partly from the nearby Kukik residential area . In 1900 the Moravians left Greenland and Uummannaq became part of the Danish Mission. From 1911, Uummannaq was part of the Qoornoq municipality.

In 1918 there were 86 inhabitants who lived in twelve houses. As usual for the Moravian community, the residents were of no European descent. Among them were eight hunters and nine fishermen, and they lived mainly from hunting reindeer and foxes, a little less from hunting seals. In Uummannaq there was a 50 square meter wooden church and a 40 square meter school. There was a catechist and a midwife.

Between 1930 and 1946 Uummannaq had 39 to 46 inhabitants. After that, the number of inhabitants fell rapidly and in 1950 the last 22 people left the place.
