Narsaq [ ˈnɑsːɑq ] (according to the old spelling Narssaĸ ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the district of Nuuk in the municipality of Sermersooq .

location

Narsaq is located on the west coast of a peninsula on the south bank of the Ameralik estuary . The nearest town is Nuuk , which is 13 miles north.

history

The residents of Narsaq, who had little European ancestry, are said to have moved from Qarajat in 1779 to change from the Moravian to the Danish Mission. In 1858 Narsaq became an Udsted . From 1911 Narsaq was a separate community in the colonial district of Godthaab. The Utoqqarmiut residential area still belonged to her. The municipality was part of the 7th district of South Greenland.

In 1918 there were 115 residents in Narsaq who lived in twelve houses. Among the residents were the Udsteds administrator, a trained catechist, 25 hunters and three fishermen. For the Udsteds administrator there was a stone apartment built in the founding year. It had two rooms and was 30 square meters. In 1909 a provisions store with a shop was built. The building was made of wood and was 44 square meters. The cooperage was built from peat and stone in 1897. The bacon house was built in 1873 and made of stone. There was also a stone powder house. The school chapel also came from 1873 and measured a good 40 m². The inhabitants lived mainly from seal hunting.

Between 1921 and 1932 a school, a new apartment for the Udsteds administrator, a fish house and a packing house were built. In 1950 Narsaq became part of the new Nuuk Municipality . Until the 1950s, the population was over 100 people. In 1960, 87 residents were counted. In 1964, Narsaq was given up.
