Johan Andreas Gudmand "Aavaat" Kleist (born February 2, 1927 in Saarloq ; † 1995 ) was a Greenlandic choir director .

Life

Johan Kleist was the son of the Udsteds administrator Josef Jakob Johan Gerhardt Kleist (1893–?) And his wife Inger Andrea Rosa Bolette Dahl (1896–?).

In his youth he founded orchestras and choirs in Greenland. He collected old songs and had them performed, thus saving them from being forgotten. He was organist in Qaqortoq and moved to Denmark in the early 1970s , where he became director of the important MIK choir in 1973, which has been occupied by Greenlanders living in Denmark since 1962 and which has performed internationally. He led the choir until 1990 when he was replaced by Walther Jensen.

Together with the Højskolelehrer Hans L. Larsen , he published the song collection Tussiaqattaarutit in 1983 in a text and a music book, which had been created over fifteen years of work. In 1993 both published a second volume.

In 1986 he was one of three people to receive the Seminariet Jubilæumsfond af 1970 award . On April 30, 1991 he was awarded the Nersornaat in silver.

Johan Kleist died in 1995 at the age of 68. Shortly after his death, some members of the MIK choir split off and founded a new choir, which was named Aavaat Choir in Johan Kleist's honor .
