Ikerasaarsuk [ iˌkɜʁaˈsɑːsːuk ] (according to the old spelling Ikerasârssuk ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the municipality of Qeqertalik in the district of Kangaatsiaq .

location

Ikerasaarsuk is located on the Alanngorsua peninsula , about 35 kilometers south of the district capital Kangaatsiaq . The closest inhabited settlement is Iginniarfik , which is about 12 kilometers east on the same peninsula.

history

In Ikerasaarsuk there are ruins of former settlements, which is why the place is also called Illukoq , which translates as "old house". The population in the 18th century succumbed to the epidemic of 1785/86. After that, the place was uninhabited for a long time. However, Carl Ludwig Giesecke mentions that salmon were caught here. The latest settlement only happened around 1900.

Some of the residents have the surnames Ugpernángitsoĸ and Inûsugtoĸ . They translate to mean "the unbelievable" and "the boy". While in West Greenland normally only the last names of European ancestors or patronyms of Christian baptismal names occur, these names are the only ones formed from Greenlandic first names or surnames, a principle that was otherwise only practiced in the later evangelized North and East Greenland .

In 1915 there were 38 people living in the area, ten of whom were hunters, one of whom was also a catechist. In 1916, the Iginniarfik municipal council suggested that Ikerasaarsuk should be abandoned. The reason was that in Ikerasaarsuk you could start fishing much sooner and the hunters in Ikerasaarsuk behaved badly towards others. This apparent envy was not seen as sufficient reason to relocate the residents of Ikerasaarsuk. In 1930 a school chapel was built in Ikerasaarsuk and later a salt factory and fish house. For a long time, the population was constant at 50 to 60 people.

Until 1950, Ikerasaarsuk was part of the Iginniarfik community as a residential area . Then the place was incorporated into the municipality of Kangaatsiaq . As a place to live, it survived the G60 policy, to which many small towns fell victim.

When the distinction between places to live and Udstedern was abolished in 1966 , the status of Ikerasaarsuk became blurred. In fact, as a former residential area, Ikerasaarsuk never received village status, which was finally made up in 1993 in order to improve trading opportunities here as well.

economy

Most of the population is employed in the fishing, sealing and whaling sectors. Large flocks of sea hares and cod are found, especially in summer . There is a small fish factory in Ikerasaarsuk that processes cod and roe and produces stockfish . Other professions in Ikerasaarsuk can mainly be found in the service sector, at Pilersuisoq or at school.

Infrastructure and supply

The port of Ikerasaarsuk is navigable from May to December and is connected to Kangaatsiaq and Aasiaat by the discoline . To the east is the Ikerasaarsuk heliport . In urban areas, traffic is by dog sled or snowmobile. There are two streets in Ikerasaarsuk, one of which connects the harbor and the heliport.

Garbage is burned in the landfill. The water supply works via a seawater desalination system integrated in the power plant . TELE Greenland takes care of telecommunications .

Development

As is usual in Greenland, the place consists mainly of single-family houses, which are spread over two development zones: The older part is on the water's edge, the newer part is built a little further in the hill around the place. Because of the few elderly people there is no old people's home in Ikerasaarsuk. In the settlement there is a citizen's office, an infirmary, a service building, a day care and the school Qaqqannguup Atuarfia , which teaches 30 students and also houses the church.

Population development

The population of Ikerasaarsuk has more than doubled in the last 40 years. Nevertheless, the place is the second smallest village in the district.
