Niaqornaarsuk [ niɑˌqɔˈnːɑːsːuk ] (according to the old spelling Nia nachornârssuk ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Kangaatsiaq in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Niaqornaarsuk is located on a small peninsula called Niaqornaarsunnguaq . In front of the site a complex of fjords, straits and bays flows into the Aalatsiviup Saqqaa, which shortly afterwards becomes Alanngorsuup Imaa . Overall, the place is on the same headland extending from the mainland as Kangaatsiaq , which is 26 km northwest. The closest inhabited place is Iginniarfik, 16 km southwest .

history

Niaqornaarsuk was settled in the 1830s. Nothing is known about its history in the 19th century. In 1915, 67 people lived at the residential area, who lived in seven houses. Among them were 17 hunters, one of whom was also a catechist.

In 1923 it was proposed to open a shop in Niaqornaarsuk. At the same time it was considered whether Niaqornaarsuk should take over the Udsteds status from Iginniarfik. In 1926 this idea was rejected. Instead, it was said that a salt factory and shop could be built if there was someone among the residents to manage it. Someone was suggested, but the colonial administrator was reluctant until the residents gave assurances that they would help out if he got into debt. The colonial administrator agreed and soon the store manager had money problems, but the population did not help and the store had to be closed again. Instead, a representative was hired to take over the trade between the residential area and Iginniarfik.

In 1936 it was proposed again to appoint Niaqornaarsuk to Udsted. In 1938 the proposal was approved and in 1939 Niaqornaarsuk became an Udsted and thus an independent municipality. Between 1931 and 1942 a school chapel, an apartment for the Udsteds administrator, a bacon house, two packing houses and a fish house were built. By 1950 Niaqornaarsuk had around 100 residents. Then the population rose sharply and in 1960 was already 245 people.

Niaqornaarsuk belonged to the Iginniarfik community as a residential area. It is unknown which parts of the community fell to Niaqornaarsuk when it became independent in 1939. In 1950 she was incorporated into the municipality of Kangaatsiaq .

economy

Niaqornaarsuk lives from fishing and in winter from seal hunting . The fish factory in the village operated by Royal Greenland mainly processes roe and salt fish is made from cod .

Infrastructure and supply

Niaqornaarsuk has a port for shipping and the Niaqornaarsuk heliport for air traffic. The fjord can usually be navigated all year round. Flights to Kangaatsiaq and Aasiaat are offered in winter .

The place has a well-developed electricity and water supply network, but no sewage network. Garbage is dumped and burned in the local garbage dump.

Development

There is a school in Niaqornaarsuk which was expanded in 2009 and can accommodate around 60 students. A Pilersuisoq branch supplies the residents with goods. The church was built in 1981. Other buildings in the village are an assembly building, a service building, a village office and an infirmary. The place also has a soccer field.
