Aalatsivik [ ˈaːˌlat͡sivik ] (according to the old spelling Aulatsivik ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Kangaatsiaq in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Aalatsivik is located on a peninsula of the same name between the Aalatsiviup Saqqaa fjord and the fjord system that is fed by the Akuliarutsip Sermia (Nordenskiöld Gletsjer) and Usulluup Sermia (Poloniagletsjer) glaciers. Niaqornaarsuk is seven kilometers north .

history

Archaeological traces can be found in Aalatsivik that suggest an early settlement. In the 18th century many people lived in the area who were very successful economically. Like many other places, Aalatsivik fell victim to the epidemic of 1785/86 and the few survivors moved away. Aalatsivik was one of the first places to live to be repopulated. In 1793, 29 adults and many children, widows and young girls lived in Aalatsivik, including 18 hunters. In 1808 Aalatsivik had 25 inhabitants, most of whom were now baptized. In the 1820s the place was deserted again. In 1831 there were 60 inhabitants, which is the last new settlement of the place.

In 1915 there were 57 inhabitants in six houses, including twelve hunters, a catechist and a midwife. In 1929 a school chapel and later a fish house or two were built. Around 100 people lived in Aalatsivik between 1930 and 1950. In 1960 the population had dropped to 7 and in 1965 the place was abandoned.
