Itilleq [ iˈtˢiɬːɜq ] (according to the old spelling Itivdleĸ ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Sisimiut in the Qeqqata communia .

location

Itilleq is located on the island of Itinnguaq on a group of islands off the mainland. In the north runs the fjord Kangerluarsunnguaq and in the south the Itillip Ilua . The closest place is the municipal capital Sisimiut 40 km north.

history

Itilleq was founded in 1847 as Udsted . In 1846 the house from Ukiivik , where an Udsted had been located until 1845, was moved to Itilleq. In 1850 there was a house and a bacon house in Itilleq. Originally, the place was in a different location.

From 1911, Itilleq was a separate municipality in the colonial district of Holsteinsborg, to which the Saqqaq residential area still belonged. It was part of the 10th district electoral council of South Greenland.

In 1918, 81 people lived in Itilleq. There was a small lake from which the drinking water was taken, but the water was poisoned because the residents buried the dead in its inlet, so they took the water from holes in the ground instead. The residents lived in eleven Greenland houses. The apartment for the Udsteds administrator, dating from 1895, was a half-timbered building with planking. The bacon house from 1916 and the provisions store and shop from 1848 were also made of wood, while the powder house was made of stone. The 22 m² chapel was only 1.72 m high, made of stone and very dilapidated. A catechist worked in her. A midwife also worked in Itilleq. There were twelve hunters and four fishermen who made a living mainly from hunting seals and foxes and from fishing.

Frederik Olsen suggested in Grønlands Landsråd in 1930 that Itilleq should be moved to an island further east, as the drinking water and heating material supply and the port conditions were too poor. The proposal was accepted and the resettlement carried out in 1933, after ensuring that the residents agreed. In the same year a new shop was built in the new location and in 1936 a new apartment for the Udsteds administrator. In 1950 Itilleq became part of the new municipality of Sisimiut . In 1952 a school was built. Several fish houses with a total area of 360 m² were built for fishing. In 1952 the amount of cod caught was 130 t by 34 fishermen. In 1960 there were already 246 people living in Itilleq. In 1963 the old church from Uummannaq (Dundas) was built in Itilleq.

Itilleq has been part of the Qeqqata Kommunia since 2009 .

Infrastructure and supply

The port of Itilleq consists of a landing stage for smaller boats and a quay for supply ships. There is no public heliport.

The town is supplied with drinking water via a seawater desalination plant operated by Nukissiorfiit . Power is supplied by a diesel power plant. Sewage is dumped into the sea and into the ground. The garbage is dumped and burned. TELE Greenland is responsible for the telecommunications connection.
