Saqqarliit [ ˌsɑqːɑˈɬːiːtˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Sarĸardlît ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Sisimiut in the Qeqqata communia .

location

Saqqarliit is located deep inside the Ikertooq fjord system in the southern branch of the Avalleq . The closest settlement is Sarfannguit 18 km west.

history

Saqqarliit was settled before 1875. From 1911 Saqqarliit belonged to the municipality of Sarfannguit.

In 1918 61 people were counted, another 16 lived in the nearby Akulleq residential area . The residents lived in six Greenland houses. In Saqqarliit there was a school chapel measuring almost 19 m², which was built as a timber-framed building with a grass-covered peat facade and looked extremely poor. Two unskilled catechists taught there. Ten hunters and nine fishermen were among the residents. They made their living by hunting foxes, seals and fishing.

In 1923 a new school chapel was built. In the 1930s, Saqqarliit got a shop and two fish houses, even though it wasn't an Udsted . In 1947 the population reached its maximum with 97 people. From 1950 Saqqarliit was part of the new municipality of Sisimiut . In 1950, 77 people lived in Saqqarliit and in 1960 there were still 52. Just one year later, all of the residents left the area.
