Isortoq [ iˈsɔtːɔq ] (according to the old spelling Isortoĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Sisimiut in the Qeqqata Kommunia .

location

Isortoq is located on a needle-shaped peninsula called Nuussuaq at the mouth of the Sisimiut Isortuat (Nordre Isortoq). Three kilometers to the west is the island of Ukiivik (Sydbay), on which one of the first colonies of Greenland was located in the 18th century. The distance to Sisimiut is 31 km to the south.

history

Isortoq was settled in 1901 by residents of Sisimiut. From 1911 Isortoq was the only residential area in Holsteinsborg municipality. The residents lived in three houses. Because Isortoq was so remote, the KGH had built two peat wall houses that act as depots at the residential area in order to supply the residents with essentials.

In the autumn of 1918/19 the 24 residents moved to Sisimiut, where they however suffered from hunger. So they returned to Isortoq the next year. Among them were five hunters and one fisherman. One of the local hunters also worked as a catechist. The inhabitants lived mainly from seal and fox hunting.

In 1930 there were already 55 people living in Isortoq. In 1941 only 37 residents left the place, which has since been abandoned.
