Ikamiut [ iˈkamiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Ikamiut ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Qasigiannguit in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Ikamiut is located on the eastern tip of an approximately 125 km² island of the same name . The district of Aasiaat with the island of Saqqarleq connects directly to the north-west of the island . Not even five meters of water separate the island of Ikamiut in the south from the peninsula hanging on the mainland, on which Kangaatsiaq and Niaqornaarsuk are located. The nearest town from Ikamiut is Akunnaaq , which is about 24 km northwest. The district capital Qasigiannguit is 33 km to the northeast.

history

It is unknown to what extent Ikamiut was inhabited before the colonial era, but some ruins could be that old and Poul Egede may also have seen the place. The first mention of Ikamiut can be found in a church book from 1781. Most or all of the residents probably fell victim to the epidemic of 1785/86. In 1808 a yarn test was supposed to be started in Ikamiut, but the war prevented this for the time being. Ikamiut was not taken into use until 1817. In 1825, 40 to 50 people lived in Ikamiut. The yarn catcher was led by the Dane Ole Søholm and Lars Munck replaced him in the 1830s. He brought an upswing to Ikamiut and so the place received the Udsted status in 1848 . A house and a bacon house were built. Due to the economic success the place grew and more buildings were built. Ikamiut is the place of origin of the Zeeb and Tellesen families.

From 1911 Ikamiut was a separate community in the colonial district of Christianshaab. She had no associated housing and was part of the 4th district electoral district of North Greenland. As part of the Qasigiannguit High Catechetical District, Ikamiut belonged to the parish of Ilulissat . In the medical field, the parish was part of the medical district of Aasiaat .

In 1915 Ikamiut had 82 residents. Sixteen of them were hunters and four were fishermen. There were twelve apartment buildings. There were also four to five houses on the Kitsissunnguit (Grønne Ejlande) island of Angissat that belonged to Ikamiut. The Udsteds administrator's apartment was built in 1889 as a timber-clad half-timbered building with roof shingles, had two rooms, a kitchen and an attic that had previously been used as a shop. The provisions store and shop also came from 1889. The large bacon house was built in 1909. Both buildings were also half-timbered buildings. The midwife had her own house. There was also a trained catechist who ran the school chapel, which was also built in 1908 as a timber-framed timber-framed building with roof shingles. There was a cross above the east gable, there was a church clock, and in the chapel was a harmonium .

In 1932 a fish house was built and in 1952 there were 22 fishermen who caught 78 tons of cod. The population was around 100 for decades from the 1930s onwards.

In 1950 Ikamiut was incorporated into the new municipality of Qasigiannguit , which replaced the old colonial district. After the municipality boundary was moved in the 1960s and Akulliit was abandoned, Ikamiut was the last village in the municipality that was incorporated into the Qaasuitsup Kommunia in 2009 , after which Ikamiut became part of the Qeqertalik municipality in 2018 .

economy

Ikamiut lives from hunting and fishing. The fish factory operated by Arctic Green Food until 2012 was taken over by Royal Greenland in 2013 . Further employment opportunities are in the areas of administration, trade, schools or churches. The place has tourism potential in the areas of hiking, camping, fishing and sightseeing.

Infrastructure and supply

There are no streets in Ikamiut, only three loose paths. In winter, transport with the surrounding area takes place with dog sleds or snowmobiles as well as via the Ikamiut heliport , and in summer by ship. The port in the east of the village consists of a pier , a pontoon jetty and a fixed jetty. The fairway was deepened for freight traffic with larger ships as well as passenger traffic with the Disko Line .

A small river supplies the place with water, which is treated in the Nukissiorfiit waterworks . Around half of the buildings in Ikamiut are connected to the drinking water network in summer. The other half, like the whole village, can get the water directly from the waterworks in winter. The power supply runs through a power station. Oil stoves provide each house individually with heat. Sewage is dumped into the sea and into the ground. It is being considered to relocate the garbage dump 200 m to the west, as the incineration of the garbage can cause bad smells. TELE Greenland is responsible for the telecommunications supply in town.

Development

The residents in Ikamiut are supplied by a branch of Pilersuisoq . There is also a soccer field, an infirmary, a village office and a service building with laundry, sanitary facilities, workshop, kitchen and meeting room. There is also day care.

The Ivilikasiup Atuarfia (translated school of the less beautiful Grasort ) teaches up to the ninth grade and includes a library, but is also used as a youth club and evening school.

There are seven protected buildings in Ikamiut.
