Kitsissunnguit ( Danish: Grønne Ejland) is an uninhabited archipelago in the Aasiaat district in Qeqertalik municipality in Greenland . It is in Disko Bay .

geography

Kitsissunnguit is halfway between Akunnaaq and Qasigiannguit . The archipelago extends over 5 larger and around 15 smaller islands , some of which are only a few hundred square meters. The largest island, Angissat , measures 3.26 km² and is also one of the easternmost.

history

The archipelago was inhabited at the beginning of the colonial period. In 1737 Poul Egede found houses on several of the islands. In 1791 they were still inhabited and the residents belonged to the colonial district of Christianshaab , but just a year later Inspector Børge Johan Schultz visited the islands and met no one else. It is said that in November 1791, the colonial administrator Andreas Lauridsen Nørregaard and some men got into a storm with the ship and went missing. The decomposed bodies of Nørregaard and another crew member were only found on the archipelago in February 1792. Residents reportedly fled when they heard ominous noises from one of the islands. These were probably the men who wanted to attract attention by hitting pots.

Attempts were made to repopulate the islands several times, but famine occurred and the population continued to die out. In 1855 an Udsted was built on the islands, but it was abandoned after a short time. But some people stayed there. At the beginning of the 20th century, the archipelago with five houses only served as temporary living space, which was used by hunters in spring and late summer.

The Kitsissunnguit / Grønne Ejland nature reserve has been located on the archipelago and adjacent waters since 2008 .
