Sermiligaaq [ ˌsɜmːiliˈɣɑːq ] (according to the old spelling Sermiligâĸ ; Tunumiisut Tsermilingaar [ ˌt͡sɜmːiɾiˈŋɑː (q) ]) is a Greenlandic settlement in the district of Ammassalik in the communeqarfik Sermersooq .

location

Sermiligaaq is located on the southern tip of a rugged peninsula on the east bank of the Qinngertivaq fjord , which is also called Sermiligaaq and is fed by the Kaarali Gletsjer and the Apuseeq (Knud Rasmussen Gletsjer). South of Sermiligaaq, the Ikaasak Sound connects the fjord with the Kangertivartigajik . Directly in front of the village, the Ikaasattiaq separates Sermiligaaq from the island of Immikkeerteq and the smaller island of Aaluiartik behind it . The closest location is Kuummiit , which is 29 km to the west. About halfway there is the abandoned US Air Force Base Bluie East-2 (Ikkatteq).

history

Sermiligaaq is believed to have been settled in the 1930s, with residents all coming here from a nearby residential area called Utoqqarmiut . In 1930 Utoqqarmiut was mentioned for the last time with 49 inhabitants, while Sermiligaaq had 58 inhabitants in 1940. In 1950, 77 people lived in the village. In 1958 a school chapel was built in Sermiligaaq and at the same time Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel built a shop, although the place was officially not an Udsted . In 1960 Sermiligaaq already had 118 residents and an apartment was built for an obstetrician. In 1965, Sermiligaaq received a radio link. In 1970, 139 people lived in the village. In 1989 the school was expanded.
