Skjoldungen is separated from mainland Greenland by the Iittuarmiit (Sønder Skjoldungesund) in the west, the Qimutuluittiip Kangertiva (Nordre Skjoldungesund) in the east and the Pulaqqaviip Ikaasaa (Mørkesund) in the north. The uninhabited, mountainous island is about 49 km long and 14 km wide. Its highest point is the mountain Miialeqaaq (pandebrasken) in the northwest with 1738 m .

history

The island was named in 1829 by Wilhelm August Graah after the Danish ruling family of the Skioldinger during the Migration Period . In 1938 150 tunumiit from the ever-growing Ammassalik were persuaded to settle on Skjoldungen. Four settlements formed in the region, not all of which were on the island: Akerninnaq , Iittuarmiit , Oqqua and Pulaqqavik . In 1952 a depot was set up to supply the population. In 1960 Skjoldungen was promoted to Udsted . At that time, around 100 people lived in the area. Almost 50 had emigrated north to Umiivik and Pikiittit in the same year . Because of the poor fishing opportunities, the region turned out to be not profitable enough and in 1964/65 Skjoldungen was abandoned again and the residents returned to the area around Ammassalik.
