The DEL Winter Game is an ice hockey game that is played every two years at the beginning of the year. It is a regular league game of the German Ice Hockey League , which is being moved to a large football stadium. By 2019, a total of four games of this type had been played in four different locations.

Emergence

The sponsor of the DEL club Nürnberg Ice Tigers , Thomas Sabo, decided in 2012 to play a game of his club based on the model of the NHL Winter Classic as an open-air event in the Nürnberg stadium . For this purpose, the meeting of the Ice Tigers against the reigning German champion Eisbären Berlin was selected in consultation with the DEL . The date set was January 5, 2013, which is during the winter break of the Bundesliga , for which the stadium is otherwise mainly used.

From December 12, 2012, the stadium was prepared. The playing area with boards corresponding to the usual requirements for DEL games was laid out on a 2500 m² wooden platform on the playing field. Three chillers created a seven centimeter thick layer of ice, which, with a temperature of −10 ° C, was not affected by air temperatures above + 5 ° and the persistent drizzle on the match day. The remaining area of the interior - the Nuremberg stadium also has a running track and other athletics facilities - was covered with a 15,000 m² white carpet. The plant should be dismantled by January 12, 2013.

The Austrian technician Gottfried Strauss, who in 2010 also set up the Gelsenkirchen Veltins Arena for the opening game of the 2010 Ice Hockey World Cup, was responsible for the construction . The event, which was raised by Thomas Sabo and the TV broadcaster, cost around one million euros.

DEL Winter Game 2013

In the game, the local Nürnberg Ice Tigers defeated the Eisbären Berlin 4: 3 (0: 0, 1: 1, 3: 2). The stadium was sold out with 50,000 spectators, the European record for an open-air league match between Jokerit and Helsingfors IFK , which took place on February 5, 2011 at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in front of 36,644 visitors. It was the first outdoor game in the history of the DEL. The Austrian TV broadcaster ServusTV broadcast the encounter with 25 cameras, 9 of which were special cameras. A camera filmed the event from a helicopter.

There was also an extensive accompanying program around the DEL game. This included musical performances by The BossHoss and an alumni game with former German ice hockey stars such as Erich Kühnhackl , Franz Reindl and Peppi Heiss .

DEL Winter Game 2015

In March 2013, the DEL clubs decided to hold the winter game every two years. The second DEL Winter Game was played on January 10, 2015 in Düsseldorf in the ESPRIT arena . The hall was rebuilt in 21 days and 180,000 liters of water were transformed into a playable ice surface with 90 km of cooling hoses. Camera recordings were transmitted to four 28 m² large screens in the stadium. The opponents of the Düsseldorfer EG were the Kölner Haie in the so-called Rhine derby . The game, which was broadcast again by ServusTV, ended with 3: 2 (1: 0, 2: 1, 0: 1) for DEG. With 51,125 spectators, the league game European record was exceeded, even if the arena was not completely sold out. Also, no new outdoor record was set because the stadium roof had to remain closed due to stormy weather conditions. The supporting program again included a "Legends Game" played by players from the 1990s and won 3-1 by the Düsseldorfer EG. The event also included a performance by the Swedish band Mando Diao .

DEL Winter Game 2017

The third DEL Winter Game took place on January 7, 2017 in Sinsheim. In the Rhein-Neckar-Arena , the home ground of the Bundesliga soccer club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , the Baden-Württemberg derby took place between the Schwenninger Wild Wings and the Adler Mannheim .

Under the motto “the good old hockey game”, the ice surface was embedded in a lake landscape with wooden boats on jetties and retro advertising boards. The renovation of the football stadium is said to have cost more than half a million euros.

With minus four degrees and snowfall, the Adler Mannheim won the game 7: 3 (1: 1.3: 2.3: 0) in front of 25,022 spectators and moved up to third place in the table.

DEL Winter Game 2019

Training of the Kölner Haie on January 10, 2019

The fourth DEL Winter Game was held on January 12, 2019 in Cologne's Rheinenergiestadion , the home ground of the second division soccer team 1. FC Köln . As in 2015, it was a Rhenish derby between the Kölner Haien and the Düsseldorfer EG.

The motto of the winter game and the supporting program was gloria victori sit - ("Honor the winner") and was intended to be a reminder of Cologne's time as a Roman fort. Among other things, for the pregame show, the players ran onto the ice as disguised gladiators and legionnaires.

The 222nd Rhenish derby between the Kölner Haien and the Düsseldorfer EG ended with the 100th DEG victory 3: 2 (1: 0, 1: 0, 0: 2) in extra time and the fastest Düsseldorf derby goal ever against Cologne . Philip Gogulla scored 1-0 for DEG after just 46 seconds .

The game was attended by a total of 47,011 spectators and the opening bully was carried out by Lukas Podolski .

DEL Winter Game 2021
