Hans Clevers
Johannes Carolus Clevers (born March 27, 1957 in Eindhoven ) is a Dutch immunologist , molecular geneticist and professor at the University of Utrecht . From 2012 to 2015 he was President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW).
Live and act
Clevers obtained a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Utrecht in 1984 and a Ph.D. from Rudy E. Ballieux in 1985. before working as a postdoctoral fellow with Cox Terhorst at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Harvard University) in Boston , Massachusetts . Between 1991 and 2002 Clevers was Professor of Immunology at the University of Utrecht. Since 2002 he has been Professor of Molecular Genetics and Head of the Hubrecht Institute there .
Clevers was able to make important contributions to elucidating the importance of the Wnt signaling path for developmental biology and oncogenesis . In particular, Clevers dealt with the importance of the adenomatous polyposis coli protein (APC protein) in the development of colon cancer . He was able to show that stem cells and cancer cells use the same mechanisms.
Since 2019 the media group Clarivate has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Clarivate Citation Laureates ).
