The eleven swans (alternative title: The wild swans ; original title: russian Дикие Лебеди , Dikije Lebedi ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Helle Karis from 1987. It is loosely based on the fairy tale The wild swans by Hans Christian Andersen .
action
As every year, the king celebrates the birthday of his only daughter Elisa, who, however, is considered missing. So he searches for girls with the name Elisa in his kingdom and actually finds a 15-year-old girl. The wicked stepmother, however, has the girl spoiled at the audience so that she looks more like a witch. The king does not realize that he actually has his long-missing daughter in front of him. Elisa has to leave the castle again. Her late mother appears in the forest, who reveals to her that she is the king's daughter and that she has eleven brothers. The wicked stepmother had bewitched the king after the mother's death and separated Elisha from her brothers.
Elisa goes on a search for the eleven princes, but people can only tell her about eleven swans. She follows the trail of the swans and finds them again at the sea. It's evening and the swans are transformed into Elisha's eleven brothers, but by day they take on the shape of swans again. The mother reappears to the girl and reports that the wicked stepmother turned the brothers into swans. Elisa has to weave eleven shirts from nettles and throw them over the swans so that the magic is broken. While working on the shirts, she is not allowed to speak a word, otherwise the swans are doomed to die. Elisa is only allowed to harvest the nettles at the forest hut or in a cemetery.
Elisa starts to work and the nettles prick her hands. A king appears at her hut and takes her with him. He marries the mute Elisa, but has a room set up for her in the castle, in which Elisa can store her previously plaited shirts and a supply of nettles. Elisa secretly sneaks out of the bedroom at night to continue working on the shirts in the chamber. When her stinging nettle supply is exhausted, she goes to the cemetery to pick new plants. Witches wait for them there to threaten them, but Elisa does not allow herself to be intimidated. The archbishop, however, has observed everything and now believes that Elisha is a witch herself. When Elisha visits the cemetery again, the king witnesses Elisha meeting the witches. The archbishop lets the people decide the fate of Elisa and the judgment of nasty women ultimately leads to Elisa being threatened with death at the stake . Elisa is driven to the execution. The shirts that had already been finished were placed on the car for her. During the journey, Elisa works hastily on the last shirt and when she arrives at the place of execution, she can slip on ten swans' shirts. The swans transform into their brothers, but the eleventh brother remains behind as a swan. He urges the brothers not to mourn for him. The archbishop takes off his hat and the people bow to Elisha, who is being held by the king.

criticism
For the film service , Die elf Schwäne was “a naturalistic and artistically ambitious film adaptation of the famous fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, which only deviates a little from the original at the end. The result is a fairy tale film that is as romantic as it is poetic and can come up with astonishing animal training. "
