Louis Jeantet Foundation

The Louis-Jeantet-Stiftung ( French: Fondation Louis-Jeantet ) is a Swiss foundation in Geneva that supports biomedical research.

It was founded in November 1982 with the legacy of Louis Jeantet. The foundation awards one to three Louis Jeantet prizes each year. It also supports biomedical research and teaching in Switzerland, particularly at the Medical Faculty of the University of Geneva , with around CHF 2 million annually for endowed professorships, grants and research grants.

The Board of Trustees includes ex officio the Geneva Health Minister, the President of the Geneva Cours de Justice (highest cantonal appellate court for civil disputes) and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva. The Scientific Committee , in which 13 European research societies and research institutes are represented, forms the jury for the Louis Jeantet Prize every year.

The administration is housed in a villa built in 1904 in the Rieu district. This listed neo-Renaissance building 501670  /  116485 are also seminar and reception rooms, and a neighboring high-rise building an auditorium.

Benefactor

Louis Jeantet (born August 4, 1897 in Paris , † December 13, 1981 in Geneva) was a French businessman. After the First World War he traded in cars and car tires (general agent of Firestone for Europe). In the 1930s he worked in finance. In 1936 he moved to Geneva and soon afterwards devoted himself only to his private life and the administration of his assets. He died childless in 1981 from complications from cancer. Before his death, he and six shop stewards organized the foundation that was established with his estate after his death.

Louis Jeantet Prize

The Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine (French Prix ​​Louis-Jeantet de médecine ) has been awarded annually since 1986 to researchers who are active in biomedical research that has more or less immediate practical application for the fight against diseases affecting humanity suffers, has, as well as in basic research in the medical field. Every year between one and three prizes are awarded. Each award consists of a research grant of CHF 450,000 and a personal contribution of CHF 50,000 (as of 2020). The award winners must be active in a member country of the Council of Europe .

There is also a Louis Jeantet Prize for early career researchers.
