Michael Stratton (born June 22, 1957 ) is a British medical doctor (pathologist) and cancer researcher.

Stratton studied medicine at Oxford with medical training at Guy's Hospital in London, Hammersmith and Maudsley Hospitals (Specialist in Pathology). In 1990 he received his doctorate from the Institute of Cancer Research at the University of London, where he later became a professor. From 2000 he was at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, becoming its deputy director in 2007 and its director in 2010. He is also CEO of the Wellcome Genome Campus. He heads the International Cancer Genome Project , which systematically searches for somatic mutations in various types of cancer. In addition to the discovery of various specific mutations in cancer cells (with the first complete catalogs of the mutations in specific tumors), this also led to the discovery of general patterns in these mutations with indications of the underlying DNA repair processes and mutation processes.

In 2013 he received the Louis Jeantet Prize . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (2008), the Academy of Medicine and the Royal College of Pathologists. He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and was knighted in 2013.
