Peter Hegemann

Peter Hegemann (born December 11, 1954 in Münster ) is a German biophysicist and professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Life

Hegemann studied chemistry in Münster and Munich and received his doctorate in Munich in 1984 with the thesis Halorhodopsin, the light-driven chloride pump in Halobacterium halobium. Research on structure and function. From 1984 to 1985 he was a post-doctoral student in Dieter Oesterhelt's group in Munich and from 1985 to 1986 with Kenneth W. Foster at Syracuse University . Since 1986 he was head of a working group in the Department of Membrane Biochemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry . He held a professorship at the University of Regensburg before he was appointed to the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2004.

Act

Hegemann is one of the discoverers of the channelrhodopsins , a family of light-activated ion channels . This discovery has brought new opportunities to science in the study of neural networks and the new field of optogenetics . Other hoped-for successes of the application lie in the regaining of lost vision and the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other neurological diseases by means of deep brain stimulation .
