Berlin Science Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berlin Science Prize of the Governing Mayor of Berlin is an award for outstanding scientific and research achievements that have been performed in or from Berlin or that are particularly useful for Berlin as a science and business location. In addition to scientific excellence, a central criterion for awarding the prize is the possibility of practical implementation of the research results.

The 40,000 euro prize was awarded for the first time by the Governing Mayor of Berlin in 2008. The prize money goes to the institution where the scientific work was performed.

A prize for young scientists is also assigned to honor innovative research approaches in a future field in Berlin that are of particular benefit to Berlin as a location for science and business. This young talent award is endowed with 10,000 euros, which will directly benefit the award winner.

The universities of Berlin, the non-university research institutions and their sponsoring organizations in Berlin as well as the members of the Berlin Senate responsible for science and research are eligible to make nominations for the two prizes.

The Association of Berlin Merchants and Industrialists has also been awarding a science prize since 2012, which is sometimes referred to as the Berlin Science Prize, but which should not be confused with the Governing Mayor's Prize.
