from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Bamberg (born November 9, 1940 in Krefeld ) is a German biophysicist and director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt .

Career

Bamberg received the Ph.D. in 1971 for a thesis on ion transport on artificial lipid membranes. in physical chemistry at the University of Basel . He then went to the University of Konstanz , where he in 1977 with a thesis on ion permeability and the kinetics of peptide ion channels habilitated . In 1979 he took part in the Heisenberg program and later became group leader of an independent research group. In 1983 he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt and in 1988 became professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Since 1993 he has been Professor of Biophysical Chemistry and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt.

Bamberg was traded in September 2019 by the media group Clarivate as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Physiology , which was awarded in October 2019 .

research

Bamberg's research focus is on channelrhodopsins . With the discovery of these special light-dependent channels in cell membranes , it is possible to intervene in the transmission of information between nerve cells . The research area of optogenetics based on this could one day lead to the fact that vision can be achieved again in certain blindnesses. In addition, the neurosciences have created a multitude of new investigation possibilities, since nerve cells in cell culture and in the brain of animals living in the brain can be reversibly switched on and off with light with high time and spatial resolution.
