Alfred Wittinghofer

Alfred Wittinghofer (born May 23, 1943 ) is a German biochemist .

From 1963 Wittinghofer studied chemistry at the TH Aachen with a diploma in 1968 and a doctorate (at the German Wool Research Center in Aachen) in 1971. After that he was a post-doctoral student at the University of North Carolina until 1973 and from 1974 research assistant at the Max- Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg. From 1980 he was group leader there. In 1992 he completed his habilitation in biochemistry at the University of Heidelberg. From 1993 to 2009 he was director of the structural biology department at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund , and since 1994 he has been honorary professor of biochemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 2009 to 2016 he was "Emeritus Scientific Member" of the institute. Since 2017 he has devoted his interests to the philosophy of the natural sciences, in the service of knowledge and society.

Wittinghofer and colleagues examined the structure, function and mode of action of the oncogene product Ras .
