Michael N. Hall
Michael Nip Hall (born June 12, 1953 in Puerto Rico ) is an American - Swiss molecular biologist and professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .
Life
Hall spent his childhood and youth in South America ( Venezuela , Peru ). He earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976 and a PhD from Thomas J. Silhavy at Harvard University in 1981 . His doctoral thesis was entitled Genetic studies on the regulation of the major outer membrane porin proteins of Escherichia coli K-12 . Hall worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and with Ira Herskowitz at the University of California, San Francisco . In 1987 Hall went to the Biozentrum of the University of Basel as an assistant professor , and in 1992 he was given a full professorship. From 1995 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2009 he headed the department for biochemistry there , and from 2002 to 2009 he was Vice Director of the Biozentrum.
Act
In 1991 Hall discovered the protein kinase TOR . Hall is considered to be a leader in research into the TOR signaling pathway (in mammals, mTOR ), which plays a crucial role in numerous processes of cell growth . The TOR signaling pathway is also important in the aging process and obesity or various diseases such as cancer , diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular diseases . Substances that intervene here are considered to be potential therapeutics for numerous diseases. Since 2016 Thomson Reuters has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) due to the number of his citations .
