Pierre Chambon
Pierre Chambon (born February 7, 1931 in Mulhouse , Alsace ) is a French geneticist .
Chambon studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg , where he received his doctorate in 1958. He was the long-time director (and founder) of the Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire (IGBMC) at the University of Strasbourg in Illkirch-Graffenstaden and, together with Jean-Pierre Ebel, is the founder of the École supérieure de biotechnologie de Strasbourg (ESBS) . He is a member of the Académie des sciences and now teaches at the Collège de France in Paris . He is the director of the Institut clinique de la souris (ICS).
His studies of proteins , which are involved in the translation of genetic information by cellular messenger substances, are considered to be important for cell and tumor biology. From the 1970s onwards, he was one of the pioneers in the application of modern genetic engineering methods to research gene regulation in eukaryotic cells. He identified RNA polymerase II (B), various transcription control elements and cloned and investigated the function of nuclear receptors for hormones. With Ronald M. Evans he discovered the receptor for retinoic acids in cells with applications in tumor research and developmental biology .
