Stefan Jentsch

Stefan Jentsch (born May 29, 1955 in Berlin ; † October 29, 2016 ) was a German cell biologist . From 1998 he was director at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried. The molecular medicine specialist Thomas Jentsch is the older brother of Stefan Jentsch.

Life

Jentsch studied biology at the Free University of Berlin , where he also graduated in 1979 and obtained his doctorate in 1983. For his doctorate he did research at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Thomas Trautner's group .

After completing his doctorate, he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral fellow in Alexander Varshavsky's laboratory . From 1988 he was head of an independent junior research group at the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the Max Planck Society in Tübingen , and in 1993 he was appointed to a professorship for cell biology at the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) at Heidelberg University. In 1998 he accepted a position as director at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried. From 1998 Stefan Jentsch was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Stefan Jentsch mainly researched the function of the ubiquitin system and ubiquitin-like systems. In particular, he is studying their role in protein breakdown and DNA repair . The modification of proteins with the small protein ubiquitin was originally described as a marker for protein degradation. However, Stefan Jentsch was able to show that ubiquitin also plays a decisive role in genome stability and DNA repair. His research was particularly relevant from a medical point of view, as damaged DNA can cause various diseases such as cancer.
