Bhuj ( Gujarati ભુજ ) is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat with around 147,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is the administrative seat of the Kachchh district and is located in a desert region near the border with Pakistan .
Bhuj is an inland transport hub for commodities and accordingly the seat of many transport companies. Other important branches of the economy are the grain trade and handicrafts. The investments of Indians living abroad and the needs of the local military bases are also important. The city is known for its old town, palaces and tombs of the rulers. Many of the sights were damaged in an earthquake in 2001 and the economy also suffered.
history
The caravan trading town of Bhuj was raised to the capital of Kachchh by Rhao Kengarji I in the middle of the 16th century . In 1819 Bhuj was captured by the British.
In the morning hours of January 26, 2001, the Gujarat earthquake destroyed large parts of Bhuj and over 13,805 people were killed, according to official figures.

Bhuj is the seat of Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University with 28 colleges and more than 15,000 students in 2004.
