Herbert Jackle

Herbert Jäckle (born July 6, 1949 in Konstanz ) is a German developmental biologist . From 2002 to 2014 he was Vice President of the Max Planck Society ; from 2015 to 2016 he was Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry .

Life

Jäckle graduated from high school in 1969 at the Leibniz Gymnasium in Rottweil. Studying chemistry and biology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg was followed by a doctorate at the university's biological faculty in 1977. He then worked there as an assistant at the Zoological Institute. From 1978 to 1980 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at Austin on the early development of insects.

In 1980 he returned to EMBL in Heidelberg, and in 1982 he became head of an independent junior research group at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research . 1984 took place the habilitation at the University of Tübingen . In 1988 he was appointed professor and full professor for genetics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Since January 1991 he has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director of the Department of "Molecular Developmental Biology" at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen. In 1993 he became honorary professor at the University of Göttingen. In June 2002 he was elected Vice President of the Max Planck Society by the Senate, and in June 2007 he was confirmed for a second term of office until 2014. Jäckle has been "retired" since 2017.

In 1985 Jäckle was accepted as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), in 1990 in the Academia Europaea , in 1998 in the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and in 2000 in the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .

Act

His research areas are molecular control mechanisms of the embryonic development of the fly Drosophila melanogaster and the energy homeostasis of organisms. Jäckle succeeded in identifying development control genes and molecular regulatory mechanisms in flies that are necessary for the formation of body segments. The control genes and their interactions, the basic molecular principles are also conserved in mammals. His projects on the regulation of energy homeostasis thus also open up access to an understanding of human obesity.
