Wolfgang Baumeister

Wolfgang Baumeister (born November 22, 1946 in Wesseling near Cologne) is a German biologist and biophysicist .

The main focus of his work is the research of molecular cell structures. Since 1988 he has been Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry . Under his leadership u. a. developed cryoelectron tomography .

Life

After graduating from high school, Wolfgang Baumeister studied biology in Münster and Bonn and received his doctorate in 1973 from the University of Düsseldorf. In 1978 he completed his habilitation in biophysics there. From 1981 to 1982 he was a Heisenberg Fellow in the Physics Department of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University , UK.

In 1983 he was appointed head of the “Molecular Structural Biology” working group at the MPI for Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich . In addition, he was an adjunct professor (apl.) At the University of Düsseldorf from 1984 to 1987 and has been an adjunct professor at the Technical University of Munich , Faculty of Chemistry , since 1987 . In 1988 he was appointed Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried. Since 2000 he has also been an honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich, Faculty of Physics.

Honors

Baumeister has been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2000, the Academy of German Natural Scientists Leopoldina since 2001, the National Academy of Sciences since 2010, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2003.
