Van Deenen Medal

The Van Deenen Medal ( Dutch Van Deenen penning , also Van Deenen medal ) is an award for outstanding biomembrane research that has been given annually since 2004 by the Institute of Biomembranes (IB) at the University of Utrecht (headed by Bernd Helms , as of 2014). The award commemorates Laurens van Deenen (1928–1994), a biomembrane researcher at Utrecht University.

The award winners give a lecture at the annual conference for biomembrane research organized by the institute. You will receive a bronze medal designed by the Dutch artist Ine de Cock .

The first prize winner in 2004 was the cell biologist Michael Sheetz from Columbia University . At the same time, the long-time director of the IB, Arie Verkleij , was awarded a special prize. His medal was made of aluminum. The 2007 laureate, Randy Schekman , was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2013 for research that has already been awarded the van Deenen Medal .
